Read: Proverbs 8:1-36
Centering Verse: For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD. (Proverbs 8:35)
- How do we gain wisdom?
- Why do we sometimes struggle to obey the words of God? What can we do to increase our receptivity to God’s ways?
- How does the way the world works (with all of its different systems working together as one) reflect the wisdom of God?
In the eighth chapter of Proverbs, we meet Lady Wisdom, a personification of God’s righteous and life-giving wisdom. Later scholars would identify Lady Wisdom with Jesus Christ, as they both represent the sagacity of God and were both present and active in the creation. Lady Wisdom called out for the people of Israel to follow her, just as Jesus called out to his disciples (and to us today) to follow him. Those who would follow Lady Wisdom would find life, for they would be kept away from the pitfalls of Madame Folly, who represented foolishness and sin. Jesus, too, promises us life when we follow him. Although, that life comes only through great sacrifice as well. Righteousness is not easy; wisdom demands that we choose goodness, even when it is difficult. But the promise of Christ is that when we make that difficult choice, we will ultimately experience the best life has to offer. The Wise One who created us knows the pathway to abundant life.
Closing Prayer: LORD God, recreate us in your righteousness.
