Read: Revelation 4:1-11
Centering Verse: At once I was in the spirit, and there in heaven stood a throne, with one seated on the throne! And the one seated there looks like jasper and carnelian, and around the throne is a rainbow that looks like an emerald. (Revelation 4:2-3)
- Is the image of Jesus on the throne of heaven an inviting image or an image that makes him feel far off? Why?
- What does it mean for you to live under the reign of Christ?
- What is your impression of the strange creatures that surround the throne in heaven?
I once heard a preacher say that the streets of Heaven are paved in gold because gold won’t be worth anything in Heaven. Love, grace, and mercy will be the true valuables in Heaven. Gold will be as commonplace as asphalt. I always liked this image. But there is still something powerful about the description of the One seated on the throne of Heaven shining in the brilliance of precious gems. Glory literally means to shine brightly. When we see the victorious Christ in his full glory, just as when Peter, James, and John saw Jesus on the mount of transfiguration, we will witness the light that cannot be dimmed. This is the light that dispels the darkness. Jesus glows in this brilliance even now as he is enthroned in heaven, waiting to return to us. How might you allow this brilliance to shine in and through you?
Closing Prayer: LORD God, show us your glory.
