Advent Devotion – Wednesday, December 12

Read: Hebrews 1:1-13

Centering Verse: He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. (Hebrews 1:3a)

Explore:

  • What is the significance of God speaking to us through his Son?
  • In what ways is Jesus higher than the angels? Why is this important?
  • Why is it important that God never changes?
  • How have you seen the powerful word of Christ at work today?

Reflect:

Have you ever wondered what would happen if God took a day off?  Now, we know that God instituted the importance of rest through the Sabbath, but even then the world was sustained by the very power of God.  The writer of Hebrews assures us that things in the cosmos continue day in and day out because God chooses to sustain the cosmos.  We do not exist on our own power and energy.  Just as God created all that there is through the Word (Jesus Christ), God continues to speak through Jesus Christ to give the cosmos foundation, substance, and meaning.  While we flitter about shopping, decorating, and celebrating, God is busy animating the world and keeping us spinning in space.  Your very life is riding upon the wave of the breath of God, still giving speech and life to the world today.  Ride that wave!

Closing Prayer: LORD God, speak life into us.
