Advent Devotion – Tuesday, December 11

Read: Matthew 1:18-25

Centering Verse: But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:20)

Explore:

  • Imagine being in Joseph’s shoes. How would you react to this situation?
  • How does God call us to go against social expectations in order to do what is right?
  • When has God asked you to do something difficult?
  • In what ways is God with you day by day?

Reflect:

“You can do hard things.”  This has become one of our family mottos in the Bizzell household.  We have learned to face our fears with this reminder that sometimes the right thing to do is also the difficult thing to do.  But when God gives us courage and conviction, we find a supernatural strength to accomplish that which challenges us.  I cannot imagine being in Joseph’s shoes.  After getting over the shock of hearing what was going on with his betrothed, he faced the challenge of dealing with the situation in such a way that shame would not come to him or Mary.  God, however, was not concerned with social shame.  God was concerned with what was right—Joseph must continue his commitment to Mary.  Mary was remaining faithful, and so must Joseph.  I further love the fact that God saw fatherhood as so important that he gave Jesus and earthly father (even though he wasn’t “necessary”).  I’m sure it was not easy—for either of them.  But, in God, we can do hard things.

Closing Prayer: LORD God, strengthen our convictions.
