Advent Devotion – Wednesday, December 5

Read: Amos 5:21-24

Centering Verse: But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. (Amos 5:24)

Explore:

  • Does our worship ever become hollow and lifeless? How so?
  • What does the justice of God look like? How does it differ from society’s conception of justice?
  • What does righteousness look like? How do we receive it?

Reflect:

One of my favorite things to do is to go on a hike and find a waterfall.  Elizabeth and I have enjoyed these sights on hikes in New Hampshire, Tennessee, and north Georgia.  It amazes me that the water is able to flow so freely without interruption.  The roar of the waterfall reminds us that there is a source somewhere beyond us, always at work.  The source doesn’t run out and as it flows it smooths out the rocky places.  In a similar way, God is working constantly to pour justice out upon the earth to bring us righteousness and to smooth away the rough edges of oppression.  In fact, God wanted the Israelites to join him in promoting and executing justice even more than God wanted them to participate in the rituals of religious life.  Their religious routines were empty unless they lived lives that reflected the true intentions of God.  Eventually, all of creation will reflect the just purposes of God.  All injustice will be defeated.  How can you allow the rushing waters of God’s goodness to wash over you, so that justice might flow out of your actions?

Closing Prayer: LORD God, surround us with the flood of your compassionate, merciful purposes.
