Advent Devotion – Tuesday, December 4

Read: Galatians 4:4-7

Centering Verse: But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son… (Galatians 4:4)

  • In what ways has God done something timely in your life?
  • What does it mean to you to be a child of God?
  • In what ways has God freed you from slavery to sin?
  • As an heir of God, what do you stand to inherit?

You’ll hear it on commercials as the announcer is trying to persuade you to buy something you didn’t even know you needed: “The time is right!”  There is always an urgency that is expressed; if you don’t act now, then you will miss out.  We can get rushed in those ways, believing that we must act before we are ready.  Yet God is the only one who can view time from a position of timelessness.  God knows when the time is just right.  God knew exactly when the world was fully prepared for the Gospel, and it was then that he sent Jesus.  There was a common language (Greek) to communicate in, Jewish communities were spread out around the known world, and a remarkable road system was instituted by the Romans.  The Gospel could be heard, received, and easily transported.  God knows, as well, when the timing is just right for you to receive what God alone has planned for you.  Do not get ahead of God—or behind God’s timing.  Connect in fervent prayer with the one who has set the path of life before you.  God knows where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you need to go next.  The only thing left to do is trust.

Closing Prayer: LORD God, give me trust in you.
